It’s been a difficult year for science fiction and fantasy fans, with genre giants Iain M Banks, Jack Vance, Ray Harryhausen and more already slipping off the mortal coil. This didn’t make the news that Richard Matheson had died any easier to fathom, but thanks to Twitter there was little doubt just how far Matheson’s influence stretched.

Predictably, Olympic fever gripped Twitter again this week. Last night’s closing ceremony was a highlight for sci-fi fans, with the Pet Shop Boys arriving in the Olympic Stadium escorted by Silent Hill -esque Pyramid Heads and Eric Idle sporting camp Stormtrooper leisurewear throughout his (brilliant) routine.

But whereas the Olympics showcased Twitter’s glorious potential as the modern watercooler, the news that the Beeb has commissioned a new Doctor Who docu-drama to celebrate the show’s 50th anniversary was the perfect example of Twitter as a breaking news service. The strict character limits mean more traditional forms of media will always be necessary for analysis and explanation, but Twitter couldn’t be better for finding out information fast and first.

In a pre-Twitter, pre-internet age, it used to be that a show’s cancellation could almost be swept under the rug. Shows would disappear off TV without explanation or fanfare. Now every announcement is pored over fetishtically, and we’re all contributing more than ever to the outcry thanks to Twitter.

Take last Friday when a slew of cancellations/commissions were announced over in Americaland. The two biggest sci-fi casualties were The Secret Circle and Awake . Neither was particularly unexpected given how they’ve been performing, but Awake is a particularly cutting loss given the exceptional quality of the show. We’ve no doubt one day it will be habitually mentioned in the same breath as Firefly … So here, in tribute to one of sci-fi’s smartest shows of recent memory, are some words of condolence for Awake:
