Arbitrage review

Richard Gere has a margin call to make in this melodrama about a Wall Street hedge-funder trying to offload his debt-ridden house of cards before the buyer realises the sums don’t add up.

It’s perhaps not the best time to be embroiled in a mistress-related scandal, something that has a suspicious cop (Tim Roth) nipping at his Guccis and his wife (Susan Sarandon) and daughter (Brit Marling) smelling a love rat.

Gere’s charm offsets his character’s amorality in what’s both slick entertainment and cautionary fable. Yet as much as Nicholas Jarecki’s debut feature simmers, it never quite boils.
