Warner Bros has taken an aggressive step in re-establishing its stable of on-screen superheroes, by aiming to launch its Justice League film in the same year as Marvel’s The Avengers 2 .
According to the LA Times (opens in new tab) , Warner wants to begin shooting the film next year in time for a 2015 release. That would put it in direct competition with The Avengers 2 , which lands in US cinemas on 1 May 2015.
Will Beall is currently hard at work on a script for the project, with the studio working hard to bring a director on board. Chris Nolan and Ben Affleck had previously been linked to the position, but neither rumour has turned out to contain much substance.
Warner’s scheduling plans will of course mean that any more standalone superhero movies ( Man Of Steel excepted) will be unlikely before the arrival of Justice League. Instead, they will likely come afterwards.
Whether that will give the film the same hard-earned clout as The Avengers remains to be seen… without individual set-up films, will the finished team-up be as effective? We’ll find out in 2015.
