The long-awaited reboot of MGM’s blockbuster franchise, Tomb Raider, is finally making progress. Today, Warner Bros. Pictures has signed on to distribute the film along with screenwriter Evan Daugherty who has been tapped to rewrite the script.
It’s expected that Daugherty, whose credits include Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Divergent, and the upcoming G.I. Joe 3, will be working on a brand new screenplay. Since the movie’s announcement several years ago, many writers have bashed out drafts, including Iron Man scribes Mark Fergus and Hawk Ostby and Buffy showrunner Marti Noxon.
As for story details, Deadline reports that the reboot will feature a younger Lara Croft as she embarks on her first adventure. No release date has been earmarked but the studio have the film “on a fast track.”
The franchise saw huge success back in 2001 and 2003 when Paramount Pictures released two movies based on the popular video game series. Starring Angelina Jolie in the titular role, Lara Croft: Tomb Raider and Tomb Raider: The Cradle Of Life made $432 million worldwide.
