If you offer folks a high-end version of an everyday gaming object, a whole bunch of them will take you up on it – even if that means paying a significant premium. Xbox boss Phil Spencer shared a celebratory Tweet for the 1 millionth Xbox One Elite Controller manufactured today, indicating that the deluxe accessory has really taken off since it first hit the market (opens in new tab) back in October 2015.
Great milestone, our one millionth Xbox Elite controller. Thanks to all who have supported. pic.twitter.com/semvYxD5YgJune 28, 2016

The super-customizable controller retails for $149.99 / £119.99 (that’s about half the price of a new Xbox One S bundle (opens in new tab)), which makes it selling anywhere near a million units in a little over half a year particularly impressive. I don’t think Microsoft anticipated the Elite Controller doing quite this well, either, since it continues to be a tough find at many retailers. People are digging those exchangeable control stick nubs and removable paddles.
Me, I’m into that shiny disco ball D-Pad. Or I would be if I could afford an Elite controller, anyway.
