It really is a bug’s life for this Ludum Dare success story from last year. After much lauding of the original 48 hour version, devs Eteeski (opens in new tab) decided to make a full game of Ant Simulator and it looks kind of amazing.
Complete with first person (ant?) perspective and a colony management system, Ant Simulator has been built in the Unity engine which means it’s nothing like Will Wright’s Sim Ant (which I had to be told about this morning because I was six when it came out). “See how different the world looks from the eyes of an ant,” says the official site (opens in new tab). “Not only do you play as an individual ant, but you will command a colony from small beginnings and grow into an ant empire!”
The environments beyond your wobbly mandibles look ultra-realistic as you stalk up and down blades of grass and the team is currently working on an Oculus Rift version just to make you extra seasick. Apparently we can choose from multiple ant species and there’ll be harvesting, building and digging to get on with. Check out the gameplay demo above and try not to imagine this in a VR headset.
