Avatar 2 wont be released until at least 2015

Avatar may be the highest-grossing movie of all time, but director James Cameron isn’t rushing himself when it comes to making the sequel(s).

In fact, according to a recent profile by The New York Times (opens in new tab) , Avatar 2 may not open until at least 2015 (and definitely not the 2014 release date previously mooted).

Cameron is said to have bought 2,500 acres of farmland around Lake Pounui in New Zealand, and is expected to live there for at least half a year during production of Avatars 2 and 3 (which he’s currently scripting).

The sequels are likely to be shot in Peter Jackson’s Wellington production studio, with Weta Digital handling the visual effects, though the motion-capture work will take place in California.

So don’t go expecting Avatar 2 for at least a few years. Let’s hope that audiences are still interested in seeing it in 2015…
