Still not got a shiny blue lit headset next to your TV? Well maybe a PlayStation VR (opens in new tab) hardware update might just push you over the virtual reality edge. Psst, don’t worry, it’s not a real chasm. There’s no enormous changes to the headset itself but new model number CUH-ZVR2 – catchy, I know – has an updated design that allows for stereo headphone cables to be integrated with the VR headset, and a “slimmer, streamlined” connection cable.
Plus, in good news for PS4 Pro owners, Sony has also announced (opens in new tab) that the new upgraded model has the capacity for HDR passthrough. The previous processing box couldn’t send through HDR signal, so if you wanted that ultra rich colour imagery you’d have to unplug the PSVR headset and plug it back in when you wanted to jump back into the game again. Now you don’t have to touch a wire and as long as your headset is off, the sweet HDR picture juice will happily flow down the wires. Unfortunately there’s no switching out just the processing unit though as the difference in cables means the whole headset would have to change.

There’s no info quite yet around when this version will be available in the US and Europe but the best way to tell whether you’re looking at the new version or not is the number on the box. The old PSVR is CUH-ZVR1 and the new one is CUHL ZVR2.
