Minecraft: Story Mode (opens in new tab) was always bound to feel a bit different from its source material – it is, after all, a narrative-driven Telltale game inspired by an open-world sandbox game with little explicit story to speak of. But if you were hankering to get a taste and see Story Mode in action, a new trailer gives us the setup to this unique spin on the Minecraft formula.

I don’t know about you, but I get a real Lego Movie vibe from this. Which is fine – I loved that movie. Watching it certainly wasn’t the same as playing with actual Lego blocks and playsets, but it captured the spirit while giving me new and interesting characters to care about. Maybe Minecraft: Story Mode will do the same. We’ll find out when the first episode of five becomes available on PC, Mac, PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, and Xbox One on October 13. Story Mode is set to debut on iOS and Android on October 15, and Wii U on an unannounced date.
