Nintendo’s Shigeru Miyamoto has been looking into virtual reality, according to remarks made during a shareholder meeting. According to meeting attendee and Japanese Twitter user NStyles (as translated (opens in new tab) by fellow Twitter user Cheesemeister), Miyamoto said that the company has “the core technology” ready.
That doesn’t mean the company’s next console, the Nintendo NX, will utilize the tech, though. According (opens in new tab) to Nstyles, there are concerns over the effects of VR after long play periods. “We want to release something that can be played for long periods, carries value, and is affordable. We want parents to feel at ease,” Miyamoto reportedly said.
His logic makes sense. VR is still a new technology, and developers are still figuring out the best way to handle problems like motion sickness and disorientation, as well as the effects of prolonged exposure. Remember how much people freaked out when the Nintendo 3DS was new, and the effects of stereoscopic 3D were still largely unknown? If you don’t, let me tell you I worked in retail at the time, and it was definitely a Very Big Deal.
So yeah. Add “VR support” to the list of things that Nintendo is thinking about, but may or may not feature in its next console (opens in new tab).
