Martin Freeman joins Captain America: Civil War

Captain America: Civil War has added another major name to its already sizeable cast list, with Marvel.com (opens in new tab) officially confirming that Martin Freeman has signed on to join the ensemble.

This being Marvel, there are absolutely no details provided as to who he might be playing. Freeman usually does a nice line in likeable everymen, so it might be interesting to see him line up as an antagonist alongside Daniel Bruhl’s Baron Zemo…

“From his roles as Bilbo Baggins and Doctor Watson to Tim in The Office, Martin’s range from the dramatic to the comedic has consistently impressed us,” said producer Kevin Feige. “We couldn’t be more honoured or excited to have such a talented actor join the Marvel Cinematic Universe.”

Exciting times for Freeman too, who has only just left one mega-franchise in the form of The Hobbit series. He’s a long way from Slough now… Directed by the Russo brothers and co-starring Chris Evans, Robert Downey Jr. and Scarlett Johansson, Captain America: Civil War will open in the UK on 29 April 2016 and the US on 6 May 2016.
