Game Of Thrones’ Maisie Williams will guest-star in an episode of Doctor Who series nine, the BBC has announced. Filming started today on “The Girl Who Died” (an echo of “The Girl Who Waited”, perhaps?), a “period adventure” written by fan-favourite series eight scribe Jamie Mathieson and Steven Moffat. Mathieson confirmed Williams would be guest-starring in his episode via Twitter:

“I’m so excited to be working on Doctor Who as it’s such a big and important part of British Culture,” Williams said. “I can’t wait to meet the cast and crew and start filming, especially as we’ll be shooting not too far from my home town.”
Steven Moffat added, “We’re thrilled to have Maisie Williams joining us on Doctor Who. It’s not possible to say too much about who or what she’s playing, but she is going to challenge the Doctor in very unexpected ways. This time he might just be out of his depth, and we know Maisie is going to give him exactly the right sort of hell.”
The Beeb has also announced details of another episode, “The Woman Who Lived”, written by Torchwood’s Catherine Tregenna, another period adventure starring the Twelfth Doctor and Clara. Both episodes will be directed by Ed Bazalgette, who has experience with period telly having recently helmed BBC One’s revamped Poldark.
In other Who news, comedian/actor Rufus Hound (who recently appeared Russell T Davies’ magnificent Cucumber) has joined the guest cast alongside Horrible Histories star Tom Stourton, Ariyon Bakare, Simon Lipkin, Ian Conningham, Murray McArthur, Barnaby Kay, John Voce, and Struan Rodger.
