God of War 4 development is further along than you think, director says he played the game start to finish

The God of War 4 (opens in new tab) reveal at E3 2016 (opens in new tab) was one of PlayStation’s biggest surprises. It’s been six months since then, and we’ve still only the single gameplay trailer (opens in new tab) to give us an idea of what the game is like. But don’t panic about development stalling – in fact, the game’s director said today that he just finished the first full playthrough.

@filthy_mortze ha. no…there is a whole game here. Just finished first full play through with the leads. very exciting milestone for us!December 22, 2016

For comparison, Final Fantasy 15 (opens in new tab) developer Kitade Satoshi announced that the massive JRPG was playable start to finish in December 2015 (opens in new tab), and the completed product was released not quite a year later. That’s good news – even if God of War goes full open world with quests and loot, I wouldn’t expect it to take longer than FF15 to come to market.

But y’know what would help make things a little more clear so that we didn’t have to speculate? A new trailer. One with a release date. Are you listening, Sony?
