The next game from the creators of The Witcher 3 (opens in new tab) will have “seamless multiplayer” and “a huge living city”, according to Polish grant applications. We already knew that CD Projekt Red’s sci-fi project would have multiplayer of some kind, but this suggests it will be integrated into the campaign rather than a dedicated side mode like in Mass Effect 3.
CDPR applied for four separate gaming-focused grants from Poland’s National Center for Research and Development, according to records (opens in new tab) translated by GamePressure (opens in new tab). The applications reveal that the studio is working on technology to make a huge city “based on rules, AI, and automation” that all plays out in real time. The seamless multiplayer will include matchmaking “and support for different game modes” which sounds like how the Watch Dogs and Dark Souls series can drop additional players into your otherwise solo campaign.
The other two applications are for “Animation Excellence” and “Cinematic Feel,” which don’t tell us quite as much. The Witcher 3 already had some pretty nice animations and cinematics, particularly for an open-world game, so snagging some extra zloty to further refine those elements couldn’t hurt.
Since The Witcher 3: Blood & Wine (opens in new tab) came out, the entire Witcher 3 team has transitioned over to work on Cyberpunk 2077. But CDPR still says it won’t start discussing details about the game until 2017. It’s going to be a long wait.
