Mad Max: Fury Road did a lot for movies. It reinvented the action genre, giving its stale tropes a much-needed shot of adrenaline, and introduced the world to one of cinema’s best female heroes – Furiosa. It should come as no surprise that most of the talk surrounding a sequel has revolved around one question; will the Imperator herself make an appearance?
“I would love to bring her back to life, are you kidding?” Charlize Theron told MTV (opens in new tab) this past weekend. “To have people react to something like that where you went and worked your balls off (laughs), it’s really, really nice, it kind of just puts everything into perspective. I can see how people are responding to her and I look at my little girl and I’m like, ‘Yeah I’d love to play this woman again, definitely.’”
Of course, it all boils down to director George Miller. He still hasn’t made his mind up one way or the other about Furiosa’s return. Last year he backtracked on earlier comments that it was unlikely she’d appear in the sequel (opens in new tab), telling reporters that Furiosa’s backstory is “really interesting (opens in new tab)” and that it would be “great” to have the chance to tell it.
Where does this leave us? Miller already confirmed that he has two different stories (opens in new tab) written up as screenplays, so it’s all down to which direction he chooses to take for the second installment. One thing’s for certain: Theron is more than game to reprise the role. “I haven’t seen George since the Oscars,” she adds. “I think all of this has been really overwhelming for him, and he likes to take his time and he’s very concise. I think if he’s ready, he’ll be ready, and hopefully he’ll call.”
Come on George, give her a ring.
